At Cat Care Clinic of the Nyacks, we offer comprehensive cat care services to cat lovers in the Nyack area and from Rockland or Bergen County that can enhance the health and welfare of your furry friend. Comprehensive wellness exams are at the top of our list. Wellness exams play a major role in keeping your cat healthy and happy over the years. Here’s what you should know about this type of preventative care.

.

What Is a Wellness Exam?

Wellness exams are checkups you schedule with your veterinarian to monitor your cat’s health. They’re generally scheduled when your cat is well, as opposed to bringing him in for a specific health problem or treatment. We recommend your kit have an annual wellness exam, so we can keep tabs on his health. Older cats may need more frequent checkups to maintain good health.

What’s Involved in a Wellness Exam?

On your first visit to our clinic, your veterinarian will take some time to explore your cat’s medical history. We’ll ask questions about his health, diet, habits, lifestyle, and behavior to become familiar with his background and care. Afterwards, we’ll give your kit a physical exam. Depending on the outcome of the exam, we may recommend preventative care treatments like parasite control, vaccinations, changes in exercise or diet, skin care, dental care, or behavior counseling.

What Does a Physical Exam Entail?

A thorough physical exam entails checking your kit from nose to tail for signs of infection or disease. Our vet will examine your kit’s eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and skin to make sure he is in good health. We’ll inspect your cat’s joints for signs of arthritis and listen to his heart for irregular heartbeats. We’ll weigh your cat and evaluate his body size to determine if he’s over or underweight for his breed. We’ll inspect his fur and skin for signs of dryness, parasites, rashes, or infections. We’ll even make a visual inspection of your kit’s teeth and gums to see if he’s suffering from dental problems or gum disease. Depending on our findings, our veterinarian may recommend diagnostic testing such as blood work or skin tests to confirm a diagnosis or rule out a medical condition.

As a valued member of your family, your kit deserves the opportunity to live a long and healthy life. Routine wellness exams enable your vet to catch problems early so your cat can get the treatment he needs for a speedy recovery.
